This page is about St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol

The Church is one of the best examples od medieval architecture in the country which has stood on this iste for about 800 years. Orginally it was at the centre of shipping and industry. The Merchantas began and ended their vogages at the shrine of Our Lady of Redcliffe and it is to them especially William Canynes and his grandson in the 14th and 15th centuries that we owe the body of the chuirch as it is today - a masterpeice of Gothic architecture.

Within the church is asuperb collection of carved bosses, elegant eighteenth century ironwork, beautiful stained glass and a world famous organ.

John Cabot who sailed from Bristol to discover Newfoundland in 1497 is commemorated in the church, and Admiral SDir William Penn whose son William founded Pennysylvnia is buried in the south Transept. There are significant links with the USA and St John's chapel was restored by the friends of St Mary Redcliffe in the United States.
