The Castle and Gardens of Mey in Caithness

This page is about The Castle and Gardens of Mey in Thurso, Caithness

The Castle of Mey was built in the lat 16th century by George Sinclair, the 14th century Earl of Caithness and was occupied by his descendents for over 300 Years!

It is the most Northenly Castle on the uk mainlandand has glorious viedws across the Pentland Firth towards Orkney.

The Queen Mother bought the Castle in 1952 and restored it and the gardens to their former glory, as it was in a poor state of repair. Recently widowed, she decided to save it from ruin and it became a much loved holiday home for the rest of her life. Since her death Prince Charles is President of the trust and stays at the castle in early August every year. The garden has been lovingly created into a traditional scottish Garden with old fashioned shrubs, roses and climbers. It was also a working garden and provided the kitchen with fruit and vegetables and flowers for the rooms.

The visitor centre and the gift shop sells Scottish products, Duchy orginal scarves made from the queen mothers own check. The tea room provides Cream teas and home baking.

The animal centre is in the converted Granary, a short walk from the rear of the castle. A fascinating experience for children with an educated bias, there are goats, a donkey, rare breeds of pig and poultry and are a renowed North country sheep.

Disabled acess is unfortunatley limited but with but can be arranged prior to notice.
