This page is about AllHallows museum in Honiton, Devon
The building has some very interesting history behind it. It is the oldest building in Honiton and was part of a chapel which later became a school before becoming a museum.
The building dates before 1327 built when the people from the 'new town' no longer liked climbing the hill to St. Michael's. chapel, in the centre of town called All Saints or Allhallows. The first gallery is the chancel of the chapel, shortened last century to make room for St. Paul's,
approximately 500 years ago a school meet in the chapel. The school of Allhallows may have started like many others when the priest wanted choirboys who sang in Latin. The priest teached them to read and write so they could sing hymns and psalms.
In 1836 the buidling became the schoolroom and was shortened, this became the dinning room and the schoolroom.l Rooms in the buildings were later added as the school increased in numbers. The room was furnished as the school chapel and was used by Allhallows School up till 1938 when the school was moved away from the town.
Half a century ago the chapel was opened as a museum and was bought by the townspeople. Thee museum holds three galleries, the Nicol, The Murch Gallery and the Norman Gallery.
Two world wars affected the town with its rationing, air raids and gas masks. The death of Joe Kennedy, (President Kennedy's brother) is remembered when he vanished from the local aerodrome. Following the first line of the tragic kennedys.
