This page is about Bicton Park Botanical Gardens in Salterton, Devon
There are 6 different gardens at this attraction including Italian, American & Stream, Mediterranean & Rose, Fernery & Shell, Hermitage and Pinetum & Arboretum. You will find more than 600 years of gardening and plant history, set in the Otter Valley, near the Jurassic coast. The landscaped gardens are tastefully set with modern facilities, providing an enjoyable experience for all ages, throughout the year.
As a grade 1 english heritage conservation site, the gardens are preserved and excellently kept for the enjoyment of all.
THe gardens were established as follows:
The Italian Garden - circa 1735 by André Le Nôtre with Victorian walled borders and flower beds.
The American & Stream Gardens - 1830s featuring colourful shrubs/trees along with giant gunnera, primulas and hostas.
The Mediterranean & Rose Gardens - Early 19th Century rose garden with phormiums and cordylines.
The Fernery & Shell House - Laid out at the begginning of the Victorian fern fever period, containing an internation collection of sea shells and exotic rocky glades.
The Hermitage Garden - Built 1839 which is a bower house overlooking ponds, waterfalls and dwarf conifers.
The Pinetum & Arboretum - Over 1000 trees, of some 300 species alot of which are endangered, 25 of which are 'Cahmpion' trees (The largest/tallest in the UK), with the Grecian Fir standing at 41 meters or 134 feet, which is the tallest on record!
