The Donkey Sanctuary was founded in 1969 by Dr Elisabeth D Svendsen MBE, registering as a Charity in 1973. Since then, Taking in over 12,000 donkeys, some as a result of cruelty, where others have been bought to the sanctuary by concerned owners who have become to unwell, or some other change of circumstances meaning they can no longer properly care for the Donkey.
The Sanctuary is actively involved in projects overseas in Kenya, Eithopia, Mexico, Egypt and others offering veterinary assistance to working Donkeys alongside advice and support to owners. Recently the Sanctuary opened a centre in Spain.
There are some 60 welfare officers who not only report and respond to Donkeys in distress, but also provide training and advice to owners on proper care.
The Sanctuary has its own veterinary clinic which offers advice and services to Donkey owners worldwide.
Come and visit the Donkeys who love the care and attention visitors offer, then stroll along the fields and maybe wander down to the sea, to have a look at the Nature Centre and conservation area on the way. Also don't miss the new maze!
The aim of the Donkey Sanctuary is to prevent suffering of Donkeys worldwide through quality training, advice and supporting Donkey welfare with permanent Sanctuary in UK and Ireland for Donkeys in need of refuge. As a charity, The Donkey Sanctuary depends 100% on contributions from supporters and visitors.
For a snack, drink or meal there is a restaurant is located at the Sanctuary. Parking is provided, there is a gift shop with all manner of Donkey themed items.
