Christchurch Priory Church in Dorset

This page is about Christchurch Priory Church in Christchurch, Dorset

It is thought that Christchurch Priory was founded in Thuinam by King Cynegils of Wessex (who was baptised in 635 AD) as a base for his work in the area.

There were good communication with a fine harbour and the confluence of the River Stour and Avon which in the latter case was navigable as far as Salisbury.

There was almost certainly a church in the 9th century and was included in King Alfred's list of fortified boroughs. The Doomsday book recalls that there was a priory here in the reign of King Edward the Confessor.
