Lulworth Castle was built in 1608 as ahunting lodge and seven monarchs have stayed there. Near by is St Mary's chapel which was the first free standing Roman Catholic chapel built in England after the Reformation.
The history of the castle actually goes back to 1515 when the land where it now stands was aquired by Thomas Howard, Queen Elizabeth made him viscount Bindon and in the same year he built a large country house on the site of Bindon Abbey. He was Vice Admiral of Dorset and defender of Dorset coast against smuggling and piracy.
Over the years the castle has had a varied and colourful history and a number of uses and occupants. One of the most significant events was the devastating fire of 1929.
There are wide open spaces, breathtaking views and beautiful walks.
There is a courtyard shop and the licensed Stable cafe for hearty refreshments.
