Winchester was once the Capital of King Alfreds Wessex. The Cathedral has its origins in the 7th Century, today the cathedral attracts more than 300,000 pilgrims and visitors every year
It has the largest Medieval nave in Europe and the architectural style varies as was developed from 1079 onwards. The transept are Norman, as are the tower and cruft. The Naive is Gothic.
Jane Austen, one of the Countries best loved novelists is buried at Winchester Cathedral, you can find out about the connections Jane Austen had with Hampshire within the Cathedral. There are many interesting things to see from a stained glass window dedicated to Izaac Walton, author of 'The Complete Angler', to the bones of Alfred the Greats Father. Theres plenty to see so walk slowly and look carefully!
