Dating from the 15 and 16 centuries and a 17 century barn conversion, the cottages and forge and bellows room are full of history. In 1811 the shoeing room and blacksmith shop were added. The Page family ran the smithy till 1983 when Charles Page died aged 91. His daughter conveyed the forge and its 2 cottages to the Hertfordshire Building Preseration Trust in 1988.
At this living museum the resident Blacksmith can be seen working in the traditional craft. There are photos, tools and documents from thew past and a tv/video display.
THE VICTORIAN COTTAGE GARDEN
Here there is a 19 century B shelter and a reconstructed granary building whichj once stood on land connected with the Earls of Essex in Watford.
THE WALL PAINTINGS
Inside one of the rooms at Forge Cottage a series of wall painting thought to date to the lat 16 century can be seen. They include - The Judgement of Solomon from the Bible, The Heraldic Arms of Queen Elizabeth I and of the owners the Newce Family. They are unique paintings and their conservation is a priority.
If you have any local memorablila or photographs or artefacts to loan to the museum they would be welcome. Helpers will also be welcome. Partie are welcome by prior arrangements lunches and teas can be provided. Evening visits with a buffet can be arranged in the summer months. You can also book a tour of the village of Much Hadham including entrance to the museum Christiana Harrison the Museum Curator provieds an educatioon service fopr visitng schools and other groups.
During the summer the museum hosts a programme of events such as craft demonstrations, musical recitals, plays and special events for children.
