Loch Ness is the largest lake in Britain by volume of water, measuring 23 miles long, averaging 1 mile wide, up to 740 feet deep. It Recieves seven rivers: Coilte, Enrick, Farigaig, Foyers, Oich, Moriston, and Tarff.
There is plenty to see and explore at Loch Ness. At the Lochs furthest point South is Fort Augustus, a lovely village which serves as an ideal place to watch boats going through the Caledonian Canal lock system. Also on the South of Loch Ness you will also find 100 foot waterfalls at Foyers, and a chance to spot Red Deer.
Travelling North you will find Invermoriston, another pretty village which has a Jacobite history. The ruins of Urquhart Castle are further North, which offers excellent views of the Loch.
Also in the North you will find the Loch Ness Exhibition Centre at Drumnadrochit which offers the chance to learn all about the Loch including its culture, history and geology, not forgetting of course the famous Loch Ness Monster, 'Nessie'! who had its first reported sighting in 565AD when it supposedly ate a local farmer!
The centre offers information in no fewer than 17 Languages, There are multi-media presentations taking you through seven different exploring 500 million years of history. Whilst covering the more scientific aspects, the centre remains jargon-free and easy to understand for all.
