Visit Gayle MIll make a remarkable journey through two centuries of British Industrial and social history. Find out how the rich and complex landscape of the Dales was shaped by man and machine.

Gayle MIll was built in 1784-5 to spin cotton and surviving by continually harnessing new technologies. It reached the finals of the BBC Restortration series in 2004 and this enabled its owners to begin a major programme of restoration and conservation work.

The mill opened to the public in 2008. Its victorian engineering and water powered systems have been restored to fullworking order, and it's heating heating and elctricity needs provided from sustainable sources. Each lasts about an hour and places are limited so booking is necessary at the Dales Countryside Museum at Hawes. The Mill welcomes group bookings and schools.

As the Mill is a Grade 2 listed building there are no lifts. For visitors with moblility difficulites or wheelchair useres there is a special interactive computer screen linked to the cameras on the floor below and the tour guides narritve.

There is a oportunity to buy from a range of hand made wooden products for home and garden from local sustainable wood.

Opening Times

Guided Tours - 30th March to 2nd October 2010
Tuesday to Saturday and Bank Holidays Sundays and Mondays.
You can join a one-hour daily tour starting at 11.00, 12.30, 14.00 and 15.30.

Demonstration Tours - First Sunday of each month in 2010.
3rd January, 7th February, 7th March, 4th April, 2nd May, 6th June, 4th July, 1st August, 5th September, 3rd October, 7th November, 5th December.
In addition to the guided tour of the Mill, you will see the original Victorian woodworking machinery being used. These two-hour tours start at 11.00 and 14.30. Booking is strongly advised.
