A great castle with 700 years of history which won the 2006 small visitor attraction of the year White Rose Awards. In 2007 it was Runner up in Enjoy England's Awards for Excellence - visitor attraction category.
Open all year round this is one of Yorkshire's great historic attractions, with entertainiing guided tours you will see the head housekeeper's recipe book - handwritten in the 1680's! Also you will see some of the Civil War Arms and Armour used in the battle of Marston Moor (1644) and a Priest hole - a secret hiding place for the Catholic Preist Fracis Ingleby in 1586. Learn about people who lived there and their mixed fortunes in love and war and much more.
During the summer months there are special guided tours for children. THere is a play trail for younger children in the wooded grounds open daily all year round with plenty of seating to enjoy the views, there are acres o0f gardens, woodland and parkland which won the Yorkshire In Bloom Award 2007 Silver Award. In spring the grounds are a blaze of colour and other flowers and shrubs come into bloom in quick succession through the year.
The kitchen garden features a collection of rare vegetables, fruit trees and a herb garden.
The Castle Gift shop stocks gifts, souvenirs, cards and books. The tea room is licensed and serves lunches teas and refreshments.
