This page is about Stump Cross Caverns in Harrowgate, North Yorkshire
Drop in to a wonderful underground world. Here in lime stone formed millons of years ago, you can see the superb of stalactites and stalagmites, unusal rock formations which make the caves an unforgetable experience.
The cave was discovered in 1860 by lead miners working at stubbe of the famous Stump "Cross". Many of the stalagmities are thought to be at least 230,000 years old and the passages themselves must be much older.
Exploration since 1860 has extended the system to over 4 miles in length. Animal bones from Reindeer, Bison, Wolves and Wolverine have been discovered dated to over 90,000 years old. Some are on display in the Visitor Centre.
Enjoy a visit to the newly refurbished tea rooms and the gift shop with a collection of crystals, fossils and gem stones as well as jewllery and sheep skins.
In the lecture theatre you can see a 20 minute film about the cave and the surronding area.
