In 1206 King John granted land for residence and deer park to Bishop Jocelin and here the story of the Bishops Palce in Wells begins.

The vaulted entrance hall and undercroft date from this time and towards the end of the 13th century, Bishop burnell added both the Great Hall and the Bishops chapel. This has recently been restored. A Jacobean staircase leads to the first floor gallery and State rooms.

A north wing was added in the early 15th century which is now the home and office of the Bishop Bath and Wells. The Great Hall fell into ruin when the lead and timbers were removed in the 16th century and the remains are preserved as a Gothic Ruin.

Serveing teas, lunches, wedding receptions and parties the Licensed Restaruant is in the medieval undercroft also serving food on the Garden Terrace overlooking the south lawn.

On the moat are mute swans which can often be seen at the gatehouse, ringing a bell for food swans were trained to do this in the 19th century and the present pair continut the traditon, passing it onto their young.

A stair lift is avialble to the first floor for disabled access and palace and gardens are accessible by wheelchair.

The Head Gardener will give group tours on some summer evenings by prior booking.
