Arundel Castle was built at the end of the 11th century by Roger de Montgomery, Earl of Arundel. It has fantastic grounds overlooking the River Arun, with its oldest feature being the motte which is 100 feet high from the dry moat constructed in 1068.
King Henry I (1068-1135) gave the Castle and lands in to his second wife, Adeliza of Louvain.
The grounds, keep and gate house have been open since 1800, the gardens have been open since 1854.
The castle, keep and gardens have been restored and renovated, the present 18th Duke and Duchess playing a big part in transforming the previously neglected 2 acres of garden.
The gardens have Herbaceous borders along with cut flower borders and an ornamental Victorian kitchen garden which provides fruit, vegetables and flowers to the Castle. There is also a peach house and vinery built in 1850.
The Fitzalan Chapel has its own garden, you will also find a rose garden ont he site of an 18th Century bowling green.
For a bite to eat, there is the Castle Restaurant. For a gift try the Castle Shop, located in the old Castle Kitchen. Also, for a bit of refreshment, try the tea kiosk near the kitchen garden.
