This castle, was built in the 19th century on the Western side of Stornoway harbour by the Mathesons. Sire James Matheson originally bought the Island in 1844, shortly after he built a mock-tudor folly.
These days, visitors benefit from guided walks around the castle grounds, although visitors are not permitted to visit ehc Castle, as it is used solely for educational purposes.
There is much history of Lewis to be told from Lews castle, with the site linked to the owners of the island - Lairds sin the 17th century. THe castles story stretches over the 'Mackenzies of Seaforth' (1610-1844), the Mathesons (1844-1918) also the short years of Lord Leverhulme (1918-1923).
Ownership was aquired by the Mackenzies of Kintail in 1610, under the consent of James VI. Lord Seafourths residence 'Seafourth Lodge' was taken up on the Island on Gearraidh Chruaidh rough sheiling area. Today parts of this lodge are maintained.
In 1815, the The last Earl of Seaforth died, following which, in 1844 the Lewis estate was sold. In 1923 Lord Leverhulme gave the Castle back to the Stornoway as a gift, only 5 years after purchasing it.
