It is housed in a lovely gothic style building dating from 1884 with collections ranging from Roman Mosaics, Thomas Hardy manuscripts and fossils of dinosuar footprints.

History, archeology, geology and the natural sciences feature in the museum's galleries. There are video displays activity charts for children and an audio guide. The museum was founded in 1846.
