Portland Castle in Dorset

This page is about Portland Castle in Portland, Dorset

Overlooking Portland Harbour, Portland Castle was built by Henry V111 to defend Weymouth against invasion by the French or Spanish. Its history is fascinating and unusally for a fortress of this period it has survived largely unaltered. It was seized by both Parliamentarians and Royalists during the civil war.

During world war 1 it was a sea plane station and was at the forefront on the D Day preperations in World War 2.

The Governor's Garden, part of the contemporary Heritage Garden series contains a circular amphitheatre made from Portland stone with seating for 200 people.

Portland Castle is accessible to all and there are audio tours, a touch tour for the visually impaired. Even Henry v111 can be found in the Great Hall!

There is also a tea room for light lunches and a cup of tea.
