Opened in May 1991 by John Wedgwood, then chairman of Southern Electricity, the museum is housed in the old power station at Christchurch. This building still retains its Edwardian charm and dates from 1903.

In the generating hall there is a fully restored Bournemouth tram car surrounded by interesting examples of local generating and distribution equipment which will help to explain how the lights come on in our homes.
Upstairs the demonstration room shows early electrical discoveries of the 19th century.
In other rooms there are collections of 19th and 20th century electrical appliances full of nostalgia. There are also some electricity service vechiles as well as the Sinclair C5. Guided tours for community groups can be arranged followed by a talk suitable to requirements. There is also a museum gift shop and parking available.
