This page is about Eling Tide Mill in Southampton, Hampshire
Eling tide mill has been in situ for over 230 years, although there has been a mill on the site for 900 years. (It has been rebuilt several times). The mill is one of only four remaining in the UK that is open to the public.
Once an important part of the economy, this tide mill situated n the edge of the New Forest uses tidal power to mill flour, although it should be known that tide mills have also been used to power bellows, saws and grind pepper, spices and gun powder!
The mill was restored in 1975 after it was abandoned in the 1940s. The restoration took 5 years, opening to the public in 1980.
An important part of our industrial hertiage, Eling tide mill is the only working mill in the UK, still producing flour today, and possibly one of only 2 productive tide mills in the world!
